ਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਾ ਮਰਦੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥ |
kaal purakh kaa maradhai maan || |
He crushes the pride of the Messenger of Death. |

ਵਾ ਕੇ ਗਲੇ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਹੈ ਫਾਸ ॥੩॥ |
vaa kae galae jam kaa hai faas ||3|| |
But the noose of the Messenger of Death is around her neck. ||3|| |
|
ਜਉ ਗੁਰਦੇਉ ਤ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੂਟੈ ॥ |
jo guradhaeo th jam thae shhoottai || |
When the Divine Guru grants His Grace, one escapes from the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਭ ਖੜੀਅਸਿ ਬੰਧਿ ॥੩॥ |
bin boojhae sabh kharreeas bandhh ||3|| |
but without understanding the essence of devotional worship, all people are eventually bound and gagged, and driven along by the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |

ਜਮਕਾਲ ਕੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ਨ ਫੇਟੈ ॥੩॥ |
jamakaal kee fir aavai n faettai ||3|| |
Then, it does not suffer beatings by the Messenger of Death. ||3|| |
|
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਚੇਤਿਆ ਜਮਿ ਪਕਰੇ ਕਾਲਿ ਸਲੁੰਞੁ ॥੧॥ |
raam naam khin pal nehee chaethiaa jam pakarae kaal salunnj ||1|| |
He does not dwell on the Lord's Name, even for an instant, and so the Messenger of Death seizes him by his hair. ||1|| |
|
ਜਿਸੁ ਅਰਾਧੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨ ਕਹੈ ॥ |
jis araadhhae jam kishh n kehai || |
Worshipping Him in adoration, one is not tortured by the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਤਨੁ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਜਮ ਸਿਉ ਪਰੈ ਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥ |
than binasai jam sio parai kaam ||1|| rehaao || |
When the body perishes, you shall have to deal with the Messenger of Death. ||1||Pause|| |

ਮਤ ਹਰਿ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਜਮ ਵਸਿ ਪਾਹਿ ॥ |
math har visariai jam vas paahi || |
If you forget the Lord, you will fall into the clutches of the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਬਖਸਿ ਲੀਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਮ ਕਾਣੇ ॥੫॥ |
bakhas leeeae naahee jam kaanae ||5|| |
The Lord forgives them, and they no longer fear the Messenger of Death. ||5|| |
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਜਮੁ ਦੇਤ ਡੰਡ ॥੧॥ |
bin boojhae jam dhaeth ddandd ||1|| |
Without understanding, he is punished by the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |
|
ਤਿਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਜਮਕੰਕਰੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੨॥ |
this nehee jamakankar karae khuaar ||2|| |
- the Messenger of Death does not abuse him. ||2|| |
|
ਜਉ ਹੋਇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਦੀਨ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਹੋਵੈ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ॥੧॥ |
jo hoe kirapaal dheen dhukh bhanjan jam thae hovai dhharam raae ||1|| |
When the Lord, the Destroyer of the pains of the poor becomes merciful, the Messenger of Death is changed into the Righteous Judge of Dharma. ||1|| |

ਜਬ ਜਮੁ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਤਬ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਕਉਨੁ ਹਵਾਲ ॥੧॥ |
jab jam aae sanghaarai praanee thab thumaro koun havaal ||1|| |
When the Messenger of Death comes to kill you, O mortal, what will your condition be then? ||1|| |

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸਿਮਰਨੁ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਜਮਕੰਕਰ ਕਰਤ ਖੁਆਰ ॥੧॥ |
har kaa simaran nimakh n simariou jamakankar karath khuaar ||1|| |
He does not meditate in remembrance on the Lord, even for an instant, and so the Messenger of Death makes him suffer. ||1|| |
|
ਉਘਰਿ ਗਈਆਂ ਖਿਨਹਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਜਮਹਿ ਗ੍ਰਾਸੇ ਝੋਟ ॥੧॥ |
oughar geeaaan khinehi bheethar jamehi graasae jhott ||1|| |
In an instant, he is exposed. The Messenger of Death seizes him by his hair. ||1|| |
|
ਨਿੰਦਕੁ ਜਮਦੂਤੀ ਆਇ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਓ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮੂੰਡ ਉਪਰਿ ਮਟਾਕ ॥ |
nindhak jamadhoothee aae sanghaariou dhaevehi moondd oupar mattaak || |
The Messenger of Death comes to slaughter the slanderer; he beats him on his head. |

ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਜੀਵਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਭੀਰ ਨ ਫਹੀ ॥੨॥੮੬॥੧੦੯॥ |
simar simar jeevath har naanak jam kee bheer n fehee ||2||86||109|| |
Meditating, meditating in remembrance on the Lord, Nanak lives; the Messenger of Death cannot catch or torment him. ||2||86||109|| |

ਉਧਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤ ਦਾਸ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਫਾਸ ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਓਹੇ ॥੨॥੧੦॥੧੩੯॥੩॥੧੩॥੧੫੫॥ |
oudhharae har santh dhaas kaatt dheenee jam kee faas pathith paavan naam jaa ko simar naanak ouhae ||2||10||139||3||13||155|| |
The Saint, the slave of the Lord is saved; the noose of the Messenger of Death is snapped. The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the Purifier of sinners; O Nanak, remember Him in meditation. ||2||10||139||3||13||155|| |

ਸਬਦਿ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਜਮਕਾਲ ਨਿਖੰਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥ |
sabadh bho bhanjan jamakaal nikhanjan har saethee liv laaee || |
Through the Word of the Shabad, I am lovingly attuned to the Lord, the Destroyer of fear, the Destroyer of the Messenger of Death. |

ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਧੇ ਮਾਰੀਅਹਿ ਭਰਮਹਿ ਭਰਮਾਇਆ ॥ |
jam dhar badhhae maareeahi bharamehi bharamaaeiaa || |
He is gagged and bound at the door of the Messenger of Death; he dies, and wanders lost in reincarnation. |

ਨਾਇ ਸੁਣਿਐ ਸੁਚਿ ਸੰਜਮੋ ਜਮੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥ |
naae suniai such sanjamo jam naerr n aavai || |
Hearing the Name, one is blessed with purity and self-control, and the Messenger of Death will not draw near. |

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਘਟਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਬਲਿਆ ॥ |
jamakaal johi n sakee ghatt chaanan baliaa || |
The Messenger of Death cannot even see him; his heart is illumined with God's Light. |

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਦੇ ਭੇਟ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਿਤ ਹੋਈ ॥ |
jamakaal milai dhae bhaett saevak nith hoee || |
The Messenger of Death will meet you, and be your constant servant. |

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਜਾਇ ॥ |
guramukh jam ddandd n lagee houmai vichahu jaae || |
The Gurmukh eliminates self-conceit from within himself; he shall not be punished by the Messenger of Death. |

ਇਕੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਸਕਤਵਾਰ ਜਮਦੂਤ ॥ |
eik dhukh sakathavaar jamadhooth || |
Another pain is the attack of the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲਿ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰੈ ਠੇਹ ॥੧॥ |
anth kaal jam maarai thaeh ||1|| |
At the very last instant, you shall strike down the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |
|
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਡਾ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥ |
houmai vaddaa rog hai sir maarae jamakaal || |
They are stricken with the great disease of egotism; they are hit on the head by the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਮਾਰੇ ਨਿਤ ਪਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥ |
jamakaal maarae nith path gavaaee || |
The Messenger of Death constantly beats them and disgraces them. |
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਤੂਟੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥ |
sathigur saev thoottai jamakaal || |
Serving the True Guru, you will shatter the Messenger of Death. |
|
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜਮ ਡੰਡੁ ਸਹੈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰ ॥ |
bin naavai jam ddandd sehai mar janamai vaaro vaar || |
Without the Name, it suffers punishment by the Messenger of Death; it comes and goes in reincarnation, over and over again. |

ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਿਰਹੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥੭॥ |
jamakaal sirahu n outharai anthar kapatt vinaas ||7|| |
The Messenger of Death hovers over their heads; they are ruined by the deceit within themselves. ||7|| |
|
ਫਾਹੀ ਫਾਥੇ ਮਿਰਗ ਜਿਉ ਸਿਰਿ ਦੀਸੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥ |
faahee faathhae mirag jio sir dheesai jamakaal || |
He is caught in the trap like the deer; the Messenger of Death hovers over his head. |

ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਸਚਾ ਰਖਵਾਲਿਆ ॥ |
pohi n sakai jamakaal sachaa rakhavaaliaa || |
The Messenger of Death cannot even touch that person who is protected by the True Lord. |

ਜਾਂ ਚੈ ਘਰਿ ਲਛਿਮੀ ਕੁਆਰੀ ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੀਵੜੇ ਕਉਤਕੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਬਪੁੜਾ ਕੋਟਵਾਲੁ ਸੁ ਕਰਾ ਸਿਰੀ ॥ |
jaan chai ghar lashhimee kuaaree chandh sooraj dheevarrae kouthak kaal bapurraa kottavaal s karaa siree || |
In His Home, the virgin Lakshmi dwells. The moon and the sun are His two lamps; the wretched Messenger of Death stages his dramas, and levies taxes on all. |

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਿਸੰਗ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਨ ਖਾਵਨੋ ॥੧॥ |
saadhhasang jap nisang jamakaal this n khaavano ||1|| |
Whoever chants and meditates in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, shall undoubtedly escape being consumed by the Messenger of Death. ||1|| |
|
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਜੀਉ ਕਹੈ ਓਨਾ ਕਉ ਜਮ ਕੀ ਤਲਬ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੩॥ |
jae ko jeeo kehai ounaa ko jam kee thalab n hoee ||4||3|| |
Whoever shows respect to them is not summoned by the Messenger of Death. ||4||3|| |

ਕਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਬਪੁਰਾ ਜਮੁ ਡਰਪੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੧॥ |
kehaa karai bapuraa jam ddarapai guramukh ridhai muraaree ||1|| |
What can the wretched, terrified Messenger of Death do to the Gurmukhs? The Lord abides in their hearts. ||1|| |

ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਪੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ॥੨॥ |
aap kirapaa kar raakhahu har jeeo pohi n sakai jamakaal ||2|| |
O Dear Lord, the Messenger of Death cannot even touch those whom You, in Your Mercy, protect. ||2|| |
|
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਜਮੁ ਨ ਤੇਟੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥੨॥ |
sathigur bhaettai jam n thaettai jis dhhur hovai sanjog ||2|| |
Whoever has such pre-ordained destiny meets with the True Guru; the Messenger of Death cannot grab him. ||2|| |
|
ਕੀਰਤਨੰ ਸਾਧਸੰਗੇਣ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਹ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੰਤਿ ਜਮਦੂਤਨਹ ॥੩੪॥ |
keerathanan saadhhasangaen naanak neh dhrisattanth jamadhoothaneh ||34|| |
and sings the Kirtan of His Praises in the Saadh Sangat, O Nanak, shall never see the Messenger of Death. ||34|| |

ਅਨਿਕ ਸਾਸਨ ਤਾੜੰਤਿ ਜਮਦੂਤਹ ਤਵ ਸੰਗੇ ਅਧਮੰ ਨਰਹ ॥ |
anik saasan thaarranth jamadhootheh thav sangae adhhaman nareh || |
Associating with you, mortals are debased and punished by the Messenger of Death in so many ways. |

ਕਬੀਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਉ ਜਮੁ ਨ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਸਕਾਰ ॥ |
kabeer maeree budhh ko jam n karai thisakaar || |
Kabeer, the Messenger of Death shall not compromise my understanding. |

ਜਿਨਿ ਇਹੁ ਜਮੂਆ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਸੁ ਜਪਿਆ ਪਰਵਿਦਗਾਰ ॥੧੪੦॥ |
jin eihu jamooaa sirajiaa s japiaa paravidhagaar ||140|| |
I have meditated on the Lord, the Cherisher, who created this Messenger of Death. ||140|| |
|
ਮਨੁ ਜੰਜਾਲੁ ਨ ਛੋਡਈ ਜਮ ਦੀਆ ਦਮਾਮਾ ਆਇ ॥੨੨੭॥ |
man janjaal n shhoddee jam dheeaa dhamaamaa aae ||227|| |
The mortal does not give up his worldly entanglements; the Messenger of Death walks in and beats the drum. ||227|| |
|
ਮਲਕੁ ਜਿ ਕੰਨੀ ਸੁਣੀਦਾ ਮੁਹੁ ਦੇਖਾਲੇ ਆਇ ॥ |
malak j kannee suneedhaa muhu dhaekhaalae aae || |
On that day, the Messenger of Death, of whom she had only heard, comes and shows its face. |

ਅਜਰਾਈਲੁ ਫਰੇਸਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਨਾਠੀ ਅਜੁ ॥੬੮॥ |
ajaraaeel faraesathaa kai ghar naathee aj ||68|| |
In which house will the Messenger of Death be a guest today? ||68|| |
|
ਮਲਕਲ ਮਉਤ ਜਾਂ ਆਵਸੀ ਸਭ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਭੰਨਿ ॥ |
malakal mouth jaan aavasee sabh dharavaajae bhann || |
But when the Messenger of Death comes, it breaks down all the doors. |

ਜੋਬਨ ਬੀਤਿ ਜਰਾ ਰੋਗਿ ਗ੍ਰਸਿਓ ਜਮਦੂਤਨ ਡੰਨੁ ਮਿਰਤੁ ਮਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥ |
joban beeth jaraa rog grasiou jamadhoothan ddann mirath mariou hai || |
His youth passes away, the illnesses of old age seize him, and the Messenger of Death punishes him; such is the death he dies. |

ਭਰਮ ਭੂਲੇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਛੁਟਹੁ ਜੂਨੀ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਜਮ ਕੋ ਨ ਡੰਡ ਕਾਲ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਧ੍ਯ੍ਯਾਈ ਹੈ ॥ |
bharam bhoolae sansaar shhuttahu joonee sanghaar jam ko n ddandd kaal guramath dhhyaaee hai || |
O foolish worldly mortal, you are deluded by doubt; give up birth and death, and you shall not be punished by the Messenger of Death. Meditate on the Guru's Teachings. |
